Welcome!

7th English is a one period class integrating Writing and Reading.  Our College Board created curriculum is called Springboard.  The entire curriculum is online, and each student has a consumable workbook that remains in the classroom.  Springboard is a thematic approach to learning which requires students to strengthen their critical and analytical thinking, reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills.

About Me

Welcome to South Valley Junior High!  I look forward to sharing a challenging and exciting year with you.  I am very proud to be a part of the staff at South Valley, and I hope you are proud to be students here as well.  I look forward to getting to know each of you and exploring the worlds of reading and writing each day.

I would like to share a little information about myself with you and hope you will feel comfortable doing the same with me.  I am a native of Arizona, as I was born in Douglas, Arizona.  Douglas is located in the southeast corner of the state of Arizona on the borders of the country of Mexico and the state of New Mexico.  I speak conversational Spanish, and Mexican food is my favorite.

After high school, I moved to Tempe where I attended ASU.  (Go Sun Devils!)  My major was Secondary English, so I am certified to teach students from 7th to 12th grade.  While at ASU, I had the opportunity to student teach in Brighton, England at Stanley Deason High School.  I enjoyed learning about a different educational system and being educated by the students about their culture.  I was also able to travel to France, Ireland, and Germany while I was there.  It was a wonderful experience for me.  Upon my return, I finished my student teaching at Hendrix Jr. High in Mesa where I taught 9th grade English.

My first job was in the Kyrene School District where I taught 6th, 7th, and 8th grade Honors and Regular Language Arts at Centennial Middle School in Ahwatukee.  It was a phenomenal experience, and I loved all of my students.  I am the proud mother of two.  My daughter, Olivia (21) is a junior at ASU, and my son Isaac (16) is a junior at Campo Verde and will run track for the Coyotes!   I stayed home with them for 10 years and then returned to the classroom. This is my eleventh year at South Valley and my sixteenth year teaching, and I love it more and more every year!

In addition to being a mom, I am one of four sisters, aunt to twenty, and great aunt to thirteen.  I love to read, read, read, travel, volunteer, and dance.  I love all Arizona sports teams (except U of A, of course) and enjoy talking about them in the classroom.  So please come prepared to pretend you are a fan!  I am also a Florida State University football fan since my cousin is a coach there.  Go Seminoles!

My professional goals are to be an effective and creative teacher and to make sure all of my students succeed and are well prepared for 8th grade and the future.  I hope to create a classroom full of mutual respect where all students feel free to express themselves verbally and in writing.  I also plan to help you continue to be lifelong readers by introducing you to a variety of genres and writing styles.  A final thing you should know is that I will do everything in my power to see that you succeed in this class and on this campus.  I look forward to discovering your many talents and to working together to make this an extraordinary year at SVJHS!
