Social Studies

Department Philosophy:

It is our philosophy to provide a safe, engaging, environment for students to explore our country's history, economy, and government.  We believe that Social Studies helps prepare students to become engaged citizens and decision makers.  We believe linking history to student relevancy is paramount to understanding.  We believe in providing varied interactive learning experiences to capture the attention of the students and teach them the skills they need to be citizens of the United States.



Course Options:

7th Grade Social Studies

This American history course focuses on the period from the Civil War through the Great Depression. Study skills, note taking, critical thinking and writing skills are developed in this course.


7th Grade Honors Social Studies This course carries a weighted grade. This course is designed for those students who possess the motivation and skill levels necessary for the honors classroom. Advanced reading strategies and writing skills will be emphasized through the use of a Pre-AP curriculum, focusing on the Arizona College and Career Readiness Standards for reading and writing (AZCCRS). Students will also go more in depth with a focus on activities that involve analysis, reasoning, debate, higher-level discussion, evaluation, and synthesis of content.


8th Grade Social Studies

This American history course focuses on World War II through present-day. This course begins with a unit on U.S. and Arizona Government, continues with a unit on Economics. Study skills, note taking, writing and critical thinking skills will continue to be a major focus.


8th Grade Honors Social Studies This course carries a weighted grade. Prerequisite: Concurrent enrollment in 8th Grade Honors English.

This course is designed for those students who possess the motivation and skill levels necessary for the honors classroom. Advanced reading strategies and writing skills will be emphasized through the use of a Pre-AP curriculum, focusing on the Arizona College and Career Ready Standards (AZCCRS). Students will also go more in depth with a focus on activities that involve analysis, reasoning, debate, higher-level discussion, evaluation, and synthesis of content.
